The United Kingdom

At the end of the vector-free period (15 March 2008) a total of 110 premises were confirmed as affected by bluetongue since it was first confirmed on 22 September 2007.

Currently, the UK is part-way into its national vaccination programme.  EU legislation means that only animals within the Protection Zone (PZ) can be vaccinated.  The initial PZ covered the far east of East Anglia and parts of Kent.  Following the commencement of vaccination on May 1st 2008 and the consequent uptake of all the available vaccine in the supply chain, the PZ has gradually moved westwards in-line with the delivery of more batches of vaccine.
